A lot of organs in the body depend on each other. One such close bond is shared between the kidneys and the heart. When the heart is in bad shape, the kidneys will perform badly as well.
The kidneys act like a fine and sophisticated sieve, so they rely on blood pressure to sieve out blood. Blood pressure which is generated by the heart. Low blood pressure means the sieves won’t work. High blood pressure will damage the sieves. The pressure needs to be just right aka normal.
So a failing heart from lack of exercise will put the kidneys down too. We should be concerned because the kidneys clean blood and take out the excesses and the filth.
Filthy blood is heartbreaking news for the immune system. Immune cells are energy-intensive clean freaks. Filthy blood is not good at transporting energy or supporting immune cells. It just sucks at it. That’s the third head to roll as a result of lack of exercise swinging its lazy sword.
The only folks receiving good news are the bacteria and viruses, which can now plunder the body as they wish because the immune system is experiencing depression.
TB is by far the most zealous of the bacteria that will take advantage of the opportunity. It is not easy to get rid of either once it sets up camp in the lungs.
It is not a very courteous guest too. There will be fever, a lot of sweating at night, coughing endlessly, weakness, lack of sleep… you know, annoying things that make life miserable. Really not worth the risk.
We could go on extolling the benefits of exercise (who wants to beat the wrinkles and look & feel forever young?) And proclaiming the demerits(obesity is linked to the development of osteoarthritis) of not exercising. But let’s assume you know exercise is important. If you didn’t I have just brought the tip of the iceberg to view. How the hell does one start exercising?
Well, I am glad you asked. Just because the good news of exercise has just been preached, doesn’t mean we start doing fifty squats and three hundred push-ups now.
We have to humble ourselves and learn to start small. Light exercises and then we build up. Like long brisk walks. Using the stairs a bit if possible. Push-ups with the knees on the ground. Doing common house chores. Walking with a dog because it will make you walk faster.
You have heard it all before. The real-life experience is that exercise is not as enjoyable as eating, even though we need both. Therefore, to stop false starts and backsliding, we need to make exercise a part of our routine.
Just like we don’t eat once for the whole week, exercise needs to be regular if the body is to gain from it. A trick that works well is to exercise before taking your daily shower. To pull this off, we need to make the exercise routine short and simple.
5 is a good start. Push-ups, sit-ups, planks… Whatever it is you can handle. Do 5 of them. When it becomes too easy you can move to 10. When that becomes too easy you can move to 20.
Just don’t go too far or it will look burdensome, time-consuming, and discouraging. Then you will start skipping it and the sustainability we are after will be lost.
We also need to take into account any medical conditions that we might be having. For example, an exercise could turn fatal to the asthma or diabetes patient if not taken under the advice of a doctor. Therefore, it is important to consult a physician if you have any medical condition before starting an exercise routine.
There is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Exercise should be of the right amount, just like food. Not too little. Not too much. Too much exercise can lead to damaged muscles and ligaments and cardiomegaly. The heart becomes so large it cannot generate enough squeezing action to pump blood to all parts of the body. What follows next more often than not is heart failure.
We might have extolled exercise today but it is not a comprehensive solution on its own. A body that allows one to enjoy life by being healthy is the summation of good practices such as eating healthy foods, drinking ample water, getting fresh air, some sunlight, rest, not overdoing even the good things and fostering good social relations.
